Who we are

Startup Surrey is an inclusive network of innovative business entrepreneurs with aligned interests and passions to foster collaboration, share inspirations and spark new ideas for success. Our purpose is to strengthen the profile for Surrey as a thriving and growing entrepreneurial community. Startup Surrey is a place to go for support to encourage entrepreneurship, inspire leadership and innovation and build collaborative partnerships.

There are more than 17,000 businesses in Surrey. Through virtual and live events, networking opportunities and an extended support system, Startup Surrey aims to facilitate partnerships, events and initiatives that help emerging businesses and entrepreneurs learn best practices, develop skills, inspire creativity and innovation and grow their businesses.

Community Leader

Rowena, Adam, Margot

Rowena Rizzotti (left)

Rowena Rizzotti is a highly successful healthcare leader with more than 30 years’ experience in executive-level leadership roles across multi-site, complex health and business environments. Rowena holds two Masters Degrees in Management and Business Administration (MBA) and also holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in Biochemistry from UBC. She is clinically trained as both a nurse and a paramedic.

Rowena served as VP of Operations for BC’s largest private seniors’ care operator and also served as a Chief Operating Officer for BC’s Northern Health Authority among many other healthcare leadership roles. Rowena earned wide acclaim for her senior leadership of Fraser Heath’s Clinical Programs and Operations including Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) and for overseeing the largest investment in BC’s history; a $500 million critical care tower in Surrey, BC.

Rowena is a founder of Innovation Boulevard and the Health & Technology DISTRICT in Surrey, is responsible for having developed a research and innovation strategy for FH in 2012, as well as developed an Innovation Centre for Healthy Aging which won a 2015 Innovator of the Year Award in BC. Rowena also was an original founder and currently leads the planning for Legion Veterans Village in Surrey. Rowena currently holds a number of senior consulting and strategic advisory roles with private sector organizations, is a member of the Conference Board of Canada’s Council for Innovation and Commercialization and is a Mentor for SFU Beedie School of Business and was recently awarded the 2018 Business Woman of the Year in the Corporate Leadership Category, is a Board Member for the Surrey Board of Trade and is Chair of the Women in Business Team.

Adam Torpey (middle)

Adam Torpey is an experienced business development and strategic marketing professional with 8+ years working in multiple industries such as Finance, I.T., Travel & Tourism, and Health & Technology. Adam holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA), focusing on business consulting, A.I. for Business, Strategic Supply Chain Management, and Digital Marketing.

Driven by integrity, he assists organizations in optimizing their sales & marketing strategies via communication activities to maximize revenue’s and build sales pipelines. In addition, helping clients with defining, differentiating, and positioning their brand to maximize customer awareness and competitive differentiation.

In addition to his primary job functions as Marketing Strategy Consultant for The Health and Technology District. He also assists HealthTech Connex, a neuro-focused health technology company, in driving their teams to identify specific action plans, including creating optimal communication objectives, value selling methodologies, and efficient processes to improve brand positioning appeal. All achieved by combining his principles of integrity, insight, and innovation to help clients build brands.

Margot Gauley (right)

Margot Gauley is the Manager of Client Services at the Health and Technology District with the Lark Group in Surrey, BC as well as one of the Founding members of the Startup Surrey team. Margot’s role at the HUB in the District includes organizing in person and virtual events for the Startups at the Health and Technology District.

Margot has a background in Marketing, Advertising and Event Management owning her own Events company for 15 years where she was responsible for events which saw up to 4000 people in attendance. From large consumer shows & events such as the West Coast Womens Show, the Here for Kids Expo & Pet Fair, the West Coast Grad Expo, the Grassroots Expo and SheTalks, to charitable & community events, galas, golf tournaments and other fundraising events, Margot has organized a wide variety of very successful events over her career.

Margot was also one of the founders of the award winning PossAbilities publication – a resource for parents of kids & adults with disabilities. As a former fitness instructor, Margot is currently a virtual and in person fitness coach specializing in people 40 years old or older.
