BDC joins Startup Canada as National Sponsor of the Fifth Annual Startup Canada Awards

May 7th, 2018 The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), the only bank devoted exclusively to entrepreneurs, has partnered with Startup Canada, the national rallying community and voice for Canada’s entrepreneurs, as a National Sponsor of the Fifth Annual Startup Canada Awards. The Awards are the hallmark event celebrating outstanding achievements in Canada’s entrepreneurship and innovation community.

“Over the last five years, the Startup Canada Awards have recognized hundreds of leading entrepreneurs, innovators, and support providers who have worked relentlessly to grow their companies, and invested time to support and champion up-and-coming leaders,” said Victoria Lennox, CEO and Co-Founder of Startup Canada. “We are proud to work with BDC to amplify a new cohort of winners in 2018.”

“BDC is proud to partner with Startup Canada to present the diversity and inclusion category of awards to entrepreneurs of various backgrounds exemplifying the spirit of Canadian entrepreneurship,” said Michael Denham. “Again and again, research makes it clear that companies that embrace diversity perform better financially. Highlighting and celebrating these individuals helps create a stronger entrepreneurial landscape in Canada.”

Every year, the Startup Canada Awards attract hundreds of nominations; celebrate more than 60 entrepreneurs, innovators, and support organizations from coast-to-coast-to-coast; and attract more than 1,500 attendees and 4,000 online viewers at regional and national ceremonies.

Grassroots Regional Awards ceremonies will be hosted by entrepreneur support partners in cities across Canada this Spring. The Awards ceremony schedule is as follows:

Startup Canada will also travel across Northern Canada to celebrate the winners of the Startup Canada Awards in the Territories.

Recipients join the prestigious Startup Canada Awards Alumni Network, presented by BDC. The Network is a platform to elevate winners’ ongoing impact for Canada and to provide inspiration for the next generation of Canadian entrepreneurs.

Among others, past recipients include Anne Whelan, President & CEO of Seafair Capital Inc.; the Right Honourable David Johnston, former Governor General of Canada; the Hadhad Family, founders of Peace by Chocolate; Nicole Verkindt, founder of Offset Market Exchange; Clearbanc; Hootsuite; Patrice Mousseau, founder of Satya Organics Inc.; and, Shawn Smith, founder of Don’t Dis-my-ability Consultation Services Inc.

BDC has been a proud supporter of Startup Canada since 2015, and with small and medium sized businesses employing more than 90 per cent of all Canadians, BDC and Startup Canada have worked together to help provide entrepreneurs with the guidance, skills and tools they need to start and grow their business. BDC is a major partner supporting Startup Canada’s International Women’s Day programming, Startup Canada Day on the Hill, #StartupChats, and the THRIVE Podcast.
