Peterborough joins the Startup Canada Communities network
PETERBOROUGH, ON June 9, 2015 – The national spotlight is on Peterborough today as local entrepreneurs, enterprise-support organizations, and government celebrate the city’s designation as an official Startup Canada Community. The Startup Canada Communities Program is the flagship program of Startup Canada, a national movement recognized globally as a best practice in fuelling grassroots entrepreneurship.
Peterborough will join 19 existing Startup Canada Communities in the national program to link their entrepreneurs with local and cross-national resources, mentors, funding, and space through both an online and off-line hyper-connected network.
“A culture in Peterborough that supports entrepreneurs and small businesses every step of the way is key to growing the local economy and reinforcing Peterborough as a great place to live and work,” said Robert Decher, Program Manager for Startup Canada. “By connecting entrepreneurs to tools, networks, advisors, and opportunities at local, national, and global levels, Startup Peterborough will be the catalyst of a thriving startup community that creates jobs and retains local talent.”
“This designation through Startup Canada helps to put Peterborough on the map as a unique and unparalleled destination to start and grow a business,” said Paul Bennett, Startup Peterborough spokesperson and local entrepreneur. “Peterborough has so much to offer from a quality of life perspective, this is a great opportunity to continue to build a business ecosystem that parallels this way of life.”
Throughout 2015, Startup Peterborough will hold Town Halls with entrepreneurs, community builders, and enterprise support partners to activate Peterborough’s growing entrepreneurial community and position it for success.
“Entrepreneurship is the foundation for building Peterborough’s future as a successful post-industrial economy, and is a key focus of our 2015-19 Strategic Plan,” said Lorne Kelsey, Director of Investment Expansion with Peterborough Economic Development. “The majority of new jobs and growth are coming from small businesses – our designation as a Startup Canada Community provides the support that our entrepreneurs and entrepreneur-owned businesses need.”
The Peterborough region has a number of assets that make it a unique place for entrepreneurs to start businesses, including three leading post-secondary institutions, a quality of life that blends cottage living with the vibrancy of urban life and a growing network of support and infrastructure that facilitates entrepreneurial success.
