What is the Startup Canada Women Entrepreneurship Fund?

The Startup Canada Women Entrepreneurship Fund invests in high-impact, grassroots initiatives across Canada that advance women entrepreneurship through education, investment, mentorship and access to growth opportunity. The Fund is brought to you in partnership with Startup Canada and Dell Canada in an effort to enable entrepreneurial leaders across Canada to mobilize and create an entrepreneurial environment that encourages and empowers women to be successful entrepreneurs.

The Raise Collective

  • (Vancouver, BC), a partnership between five entrepreneurs, will advance a collaborative fundraising & investing platform to support and build the capacity of risk-astute women investors – empowering them with investment opportunities and tools online and through grassroots events.

McWatt Family Farms

  • (Ottawa, ON), known for their programs that support at-risk youth, will launch Farm-preneurs, an initiative to support young girls with a passion for agricultural-based and food-based businesses.

Mamas & Co.

  • (Toronto, ON), an online community for women entrepreneurs, will launch an Online Learning Platform for Women Entrepreneurs to provide high-quality content and tools to mothers across Canada who are starting and scaling their businesses.

  • (Peterborough, ON) are partnering to run the Wellness Fair for Female Entrepreneurs to provide women entrepreneurs with tools and connections to lead a happier and more balanced lifestyle.

(Crossfield, AB), will hold a Rural Women in Business Conference to connect and celebrate women entrepreneurs from central Alberta.



With the support of the fund, four International Women’s Day events were also held in grassroots Startup Communities in Montreal QC, Durham Region ON, Toronto ON and Charlottetown PEI to celebrate, connect and inspire women entrepreneurs. Funded events include:

On March 8th, 160 entrepreneurs joined to hear leading insights from seven diverse women entrepreneurs and investors. Topics discussed ranged from bootstrapping to Series A funding. In addition, one women entrepreneur received a scholarship to Founder Institute Toronto.

Women entrepreneurs from across Durham Region gathered for an evening of mentorship and brainstorming. Attendees discussed 10 key areas that women entrepreneurs face barriers and brainstormed how the community can overcome and support women in business.

A dynamic panel kicked off a discussion with over 40 attendees on women in tech at this event hosted in Montreal. Discussions focused on empowering women in leadership roles and what men can do to support women in the workplace.


Over 60 women in business  and children gathered together at this family friendly evening of networking, connecting and celebrating women. This event was hosted at the Montessori School of Charlottetown.


Q: Where do funds come from?

The Startup Canada Women Entrepreneurship Fund is solely sponsored by Dell Canada and administered by Startup Canada.

Q: Who can apply?

The applicant can be any Canadian-based entrepreneur, group or organization.

Q: Who should the project target?

The project must directly support women entrepreneurs and women-led companies in Canada.

Q: What can grants be used for?

Grant funds will be awarded to groups and organizations to increase the level of entrepreneurship activities that support women. Project examples may include a women’s entrepreneurship conference and/or speaker series, mentorship program, a workshop series, and trade missions.

Q: Who will adjudicate the applications?

Projects will be adjudicated by a diverse group of entrepreneurial leaders, and men and women advocates for women entrepreneurship.

Q: What is the maximum funding available for a project?

Grants are available up to $3,000.

Q: What are the key timelines?

Intake of applications will begin January 24, 2017, with a deadline of February 21, 2017. Adjudication will take place in February 2017, and fund recipients will be contacted and announced in March 2017.
