Iain Klugman and Dan Gunn Join Startup Canada to Ignite Startup Communities
Startup Canada announced today that it will add two Canadian entrepreneurship leaders as Advisors to its Startup Communities program: Dan Gunn, CEO of VIATeC in Victoria and Iain Klugman, CEO of Communitech in Waterloo Region.
Startup Canada Communities is a national program that brings together Canada”s entrepreneur community builders and local enterprise hubs, and provides them with the tools, technologies and trusted advisors to build their municipalities into supportive places for entrepreneurs to start and grow successful companies.
As Advisors to Startup Canada, Gunn and Klugman will help to steer the direction of Startup Canada”s grassroots effort to build a pan-Canadian infrastructure to accelerate entrepreneur connectivity and increase growth propensity, as well as directly mentor and support the growing network of entrepreneurs and economic development professionals who are leveraging the network to ignite entrepreneurship from Smithers and Calgary to Montreal and Fredericton.
Dan Gunn helped build the VIATeC accelerator program and incubator space that has been serving Victoria”s tech community for 25 years while technology has grown to be Victoria”s largest industry with $3.15 billion in revenues and a $4.03 billion economic impact.
“I admire how Startup Canada was able to get this far strictly as a volunteer organization and I want to support them as they grow exciting programs like Startup Communities,” said Gunn. “Communities of all types benefit when leaders are brought together to share ideas and challenges and I”m looking forward to sharing what we have learned building the tech community in Victoria.”
Under Iain Klugman’s leadership, Communitech has become one of North America’s leading tech enabling organizations, supporting the growth of more than 1,000 technology companies. Klugman believes passionately in the power of the entrepreneur-driven economy, supporting his own region in joining the Startup Canada Communities network in 2013.
“The Startup Canada Communities program is an excellent way to create and celebrate entrepreneurial spirit in cities across the nation,” Klugman says. “Connecting Canada’s entrepreneurs to resources in their own community can make all the difference to launching successful companies.”
Gunn and Klugman join Ken Bautista of Startup Edmonton as program Advisors who have built Canadian startup ecosystems and who continue to improve their local communities as well as contribute to the national dialogue on supporting entrepreneurs.
Both Gunn and Klugman will be featured at Startup Canada Day on the Hill on November 26th in Ottawa, an event which brings hundreds of entrepreneurs together with Government Leaders to policies and programs to advance the success of Canada”s entrepreneurs.
