Winnipeg, MB (Tuesday, June 26, 2012) – It’s one thing to build up an entrepreneurial community, it’s another to maintain it. Succession planning and maintaining a steady stream of newcomers to the entrepreneurial field topped the discussions at Startup Canada’s National Tour visits in Winnipeg and Brandon / Westman this month. More than 300 members of the local startup and enterprise support sectors gathered for Town Hall events in the two cities to brainstorm community-led solutions to key challenges faced by Manitoba entrepreneurs.
“A critical differentiator entrepreneurs bring to our economy is their culture and track record of reinvesting in the community,” said Michael Legary, Founder of Seccuris Inc. and Startup Canada’s Patron in Manitoba. “Startup Canada helped bring together several different groups in the business community who had never worked together before. This has helped shape some exciting new opportunities and activities for the years to come, such as StartUp Weekend this August where a number of different local entrepreneurs, businesses and industry support groups have come together to reinvest in local growth.”
Manitoba is the sixth province Startup Canada has visited for its cross-country tour to celebrate and support entrepreneurship across Canada. Sustainability was a key theme in Manitoba, with Town Hall participants discussing ways to promote, celebrate, and enable newcomer entrepreneurship through special events, communications campaigns, and targeted programs.
“The intensity with which the participants embraced the workshop activity, developed ideas, and presented business concepts to the audience demonstrates the strong entrepreneurial culture of Brandon / Westman,” said Bonnie Nay-Draper, Manager of the Western Regional Office of Manitoba Entrepreneurship, Training & Trade, on behalf of the Brandon / Westman Town Hall Committee. “The strength and potential behind their suggestions was truly amazing. This was a great event for Manitoba entrepreneurs to share ideas on the issues presented and provide potential solutions, demonstrating their relentless creativity and resourcefulness in continuing to create a stronger entrepreneurial culture in our communities.”
Local ideas included involving newcomer entrepreneurial leaders in community business councils, chambers, and city planning boards as well as developing public celebrations of cross-cultural entrepreneurship.
Seed ideas for potential community-building projects were also pitched. Groups proposed on online training school for new immigrants to apply their existing skill sets towards entrepreneurial endeavours; a welcome package that would provide immigrants and new entrepreneurs with the resources, tools, training, and guidance needed to startup a business and succeed; and a professional service network that would help entrepreneurs smoothly transition their business to other entrepreneurs within or outside their family or organization.
“Manitoba had a great week with Startup Canada,” said Jan Lederman, President of Innovate Manitoba. “Its focus on bringing together startups and support organizations from across the country aligns perfectly with Innovate Manitoba’s role as Manitoba’s innovation hub, connecting Manitoba’s enterprise support organizations and linking entrepreneurs, researchers and inventors with the resources they need to succeed in business. By working together, we will play our part in strengthening Canadian entrepreneurship.”
Recurring themes of improving community collaborations, building one-stop-shops for entrepreneurial support services, and cultivating new youth entrepreneurship networks were also championed, which continues to reinforce the importance and universal need to build these solutions into Canada’s entrepreneurial future.
“As a member of Startup Canada’s Governing Board it was a pleasure and privilege to be a part of the Manitoba Town Hall and Fringe events on the National Tour,” said Lanis Anthony, one of Canada’s senior business-investment communications entrepreneurs. “Led by dynamic Organizing Committees in both Winnipeg and Brandon/Westman, the events provided an important and insightful “field-level view and voice” of our nation’s entrepreneurs. It was an incredible experience to hear what enterprising individuals, stakeholders and thought leaders had to say, share and suggest regarding challenges faced and potential solutions. I’m still basking in the afterglow!”
Since launching its National Tour in March, the Startup Canada team has visited 21 cities and completed more than half of its tour across the country. A national audience is following the campaign through Startup Canada’s interactive website, live web-streamed broadcasts of the tour, and active social media networks.
