“Andrea Mandel-Campbell, veteran business journalist and author of the book, Why Mexicans Don’t Drink Molson: Rescuing Canadian Business from the Suds of Global Obscurity, was at St. F.X. last week as part of a Startup Canada event.
Mandel-Campbell is on the board of Startup Canada, a new national organization which aims to inspire, foster and celebrate entrepreneurship in Canada. The organization is on a national tour and made Antigonish, on March 21, an early stop.
Mandel-Campbell, a former TV anchor with CTV’s Business News Network and Progressive Conservative candidate in Ontario’s provincial election last year, was the keynote speaker at the event.
“What I talked about is, essentially, how we have an amazing amount of resources in Canada as a whole,” she said.
“Whether it be some great companies, amazing human capital, a lot of natural resources, multi-cultural population, great international reputation, an amazing proximity to the U.S. which is still the world’s most prosperous market… we have all of those things but, for some reason sometimes we don’t really recognize the potential that we have.”
It was this type of recognition that led Mandel-Campbell to write her book which has been described as a “scathing wake-up call castigating the timidity of Canadian companies in international markets.”
