13,340 Kilometers Away from Home

Molo! That was the friendly greeting I received every morning as I entered the town of Khayelitsha. Khayelitsha or ‘new home’ in isiXhosa is situated approximately 3
5 km of Cape Town, South Africa.
The journey began almost a year ago when I decided to join Golden Future, an outreach project aimed at improving the lives of youth in vulnerable communities in Cape Town, South Africa. Nearly 30 volunteers, primarily students from the University of Windsor, travelled nearly 13,340 kilometers to lend a hand to the impoverished community of Khayelitsha. Some volunteers were there to promote entrepreneurship and self-sustainability while others were there to address issues such as HIV/AIDS and STIs, life skills, education and community engagement.
The Golden Future project was launched in 2007 through the vision of Gary Kalaci, a student of business and law at the University of Windsor. Recognizing the enormous and prevalent needs of diverse communities in Cape Town, Kalaci collaborated with both University of Windsor students and students from the University of Cape Town to launch the project.
